Project background

Founded in 2015, Radio Al-Salam 94.3 FM is a multiconfessional and apolitical radio, dedicated to IDPs, refugees and returnees in the North of Iraq. It is broadcasted through two transmitters, located in Ankawa (Erbil) and in Duhok, and can be heard in the Governorates of Erbil, Duhok and Nineva up to Mosul, Tel Afar and Sinjar. The radio station can also be listened to through its website and smartphone application.

The media aims to spread a message of peace, provide a space for testimony, dialogue and exchanges, regardless of religious and ethnic backgrounds. It is building bridges between the various communities of Iraq, and making international action more accessible and understandable to local populations.

Radio Al-Salam 94.3 FM is broadcasted 24/7 in Arabic and Kurdish. The English languade is also used on the radio’s social media accounts.

The programs provide regular news, informing the audience of local and international developments. They include field reports, testimonies and interviews, as well as cultural and sport shows.

The project is co-financed by European private and public donors, and directed by a Frenchman. It also broadcasts commercials to improve its economic sustainability.

 

Responsibilities

As the radio’s Editor-in-chief, you will be in charge of the following.

 

1.       Contributing to the editorial offer of Radio Al-Salam:

-          Providing field materials every week (reports, interviews and testimonies)

-          Hosting a show several times a week (its topic and timetable can be discussed depending on the team’s and the editor-in-chief’s interests, competences and availabilities)

 

2.       Coordinating the journalists’ work along with the Vice-Director:

-          Contributing to the setting-up and the reviewing of weekly schedules

-          Coming up with new ideas for reports and testimonies

-          Listening, reviewing and approving the journalists’ materials

-          Collaborating with the technical team for broadcasting set-ups

-          Bringing opportunities for improvement of the journalists’ works

-          Ensuring the overall quality of the broadcast

 

3.       Managing the freelancers on the field (5 freelancers outside of Erbil):

-          Informing the freelancers about the materials asked to them

-          Hearing, reviewing and approving the freelancers’ materials

-          Coming up with new ideas for reports and testimonies

-          Keeping track of the monthly number of materials delivered

-          Organizing the freelancers’ monthly pay

-          Providing appropriate receipts to the Radio Director

 

4.       Other tasks

-          Temporarily representing the publication's editorial team at social functions

-          Taking part in decision-making meetings with the radio’s Director and Vice-director

-          Contributing to the development and training of journalists and freelancers

 

Qualifications

Arabic and English languages required,

Strong previous journalistic experience,

Communication skills,

Ability to work with a multicultural team of journalists,

Humility and collaborative mindset (especially in the relation with the Vice-director),

Fine leadership skills and authority.

 

Specifics

Full-time position (40 hours / week).

The position requires availability and on-site presence on weekdays.
Monthly salary : 1,250 USD + transportation allowance

 

Location

Babylon Media offices, Ainkawa, Erbil

Temporary day trips to Mosul and throughout Iraqi Kurdistan
