Role Synopsis An outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join an exciting division of the client. This role will have the opportunity to contribute in a positive way that will help build a sustainable future for the people of Iraq. The Senior Process Safety Engineer (SPSE) will be a member of the Central Engineering Team reporting into the Process Safety Team Lead (PSTL). The SPSE will provide deep process safety engineering expertise and judgment in service of the operation and development of the field. The SPSE shall work closely with Projects and Area Operations to ensure efficient handover of all issues that require process safety engineering input to resolve.
The incumbent is expected to assist the PSTL with the Process Safety programme for the Operation and help champion all aspects of good Process Safety management in an aging oilfield.
Key Responsibilities Key roles and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Promote a culture of process safety and continuous improvement.
- Assist the PSTL with the nationalisation program and support professional development of Iraqi nationals.
- Provides process safety engineering expertise to support the wider organisation through engineering guidance and by performing and reviewing complex, or non-routine process safety engineering calculations, risk assessment and analyses.
- Provides process safety engineering expertise to EQs, MoCs and Projects including coordination with Production / Operations/ Maintenance staff to identify / prioritise engineering activities.
- Provide assurance on process safety engineering compliance with applicable Standards, Specifications, Codes and Regulations within and 3rd parties. Ensure that non-conformities and temporary deviations are identified and assessed.
- Perform / review risk and consequence analysis and where required coach others on the use of risk analysis and consequence modelling techniques such as QRA, FERA, Explosion Modelling, Fire and Gas Mapping using industry standard software such as PHAST
- Where required facilitate and participaite in process safety design reviews and safety studies such as HAZOP and HAZID/ENVID.
- Working knowledge of functional safety concepts and the application of industry standards e.g. IEC61508/11, in design and operational phases.
- Ensures critical process safety documentation and information, e.g. Bowtie diagrams are kept up to date.
- Assists with the reviews of the impact of emerging risks
- Communicates process safety engineering lessons learned to site Operations teams and encourages a culture of sharing experience and continuous improvement.
- Where required, provides process safety engineering expertise in performing incident investigations and defect investigations.
- Provides process safety engineering expertise to delivery of regional actions. Leads on resolution of complex, multi-discipline technical issues where the dominant component is process safety related.
Essential Education Degree / diploma qualified engineer or equivalent work experience. BSc, BEng or MEng (UK), BSc (US), or international equivalent in Chemical / Process Engineering or other relevant engineering subject.
Professional accreditation, such as Professional Engineer or Chartered Engineer.
Essential experience and job requirements At least 15 years industry experience with 5 years in international multicultural operational roles across the full value chain of hydrocarbon and water production facilities. Experience in brownfield operations process safety engineering, reliability, modifications and strong technical leadership with influencing capabilities.
An ability to work effectively with other disciplines / teams to understand and assess complex issues and develop pragmatic solutions.
Proven ability in practical application of engineering standards and practices for process safety engineering. Candidate to demonstrate familiarity with all relevant industry process safety engineering codes, standards, and practices (API, ASME, ISO etc.), and relevant experience with key process safety engineering tools such as Phast, Bowtie XP, Aspen HYSYS & Flare System Analyser
Desirable criteria and qualifications- Key skills include communication, interpersonal relationships, facilitation, influencing, and negotiating across department.
- Ability to develop others and foster diverse relationships in a multicultural environment.
- Ability to identify correct priorities of maintenance and engineering support activities.
- Ability to Identify and assess process safety hazards.
- Ability to speak Arabic would be beneficial but not essential.
