Project background

Founded in 2015, Radio Al-Salam 94.3 FM is a multiconfessional and apolitical radio, mainly dedicated to IDPs, refugees and returnees in the North of Iraq.
The Radio Station aim is to build bridges between the various communities of Iraq and to spread a message of peace, provide a space for testimony, dialogue and exchanges, regardless of religious and ethnic backgrounds.

Radio Al-Salam 94.3 FM is broadcasted 24/7 in Arabic and Kurdish in the Governorates of Erbil, Duhok and Nineva up to Mosul, Tel Afar and Sinjar.

The Radio Station can also be listened to through its website and smartphone application.

The programs provide regular news, informing the audience of local and international developments.

They include field reports, testimonies and interviews, as well as cultural and sport shows.

Responsibilities

As the radio’s Editor-in-chief you will oversee daily planning of the news coverage across all platforms, will have editorial responsibility for the content of the Service, incl. its audio and digital production, will supervise the reporters and editors, and ensure that all their output, incl. news and features and related editorial content quality is of industry standard and of interest and relevant to audiences.

What Does The Role Entail??

Key responsibilities include:

1.Contributing to the editorial content of Radio Al-Salam:

• Monitoring the news and finding relevant subjects to cover
• Providing field materials every week (reports, interviews and testimonies)Temporary day trips to Mosul/ Nineveh Plain region and throughout Iraqi Kurdistan
• Providing pictures and/or videos for the Social Media of the Radio
• Presenting short news bulletins  
•  Hosting live shows and pre-recorded shows according to the broadcast programming

2.      Coordinating the journalists’ work along with the executive management:

• Ensuring the Radio Station's editorial policy
• Contributing to the setting-up and the reviewing of daily schedules
• Exploring innovative angles for coverage, ensuring relevance to local audiences, initiating program ideas
• Ensuring scheduled and finished journalits’ materials are of high quality, balanced, carefully edited, and ready for distribution
• Collaborating with the technical team for broadcasting set-ups
• Checking social posts in collaboration with the multimedia team and rewrite where necessary for brevity and to maximise audience engagement

3.      Managing the freelancers on the field (6 freelancers outside of Erbil):

• Managing the team of freelancers for ideas and scheduled materials
• Ensuring scheduled and finished freelancers’ materials are of high quality, balanced, carefully edited, and ready for distribution
• Keeping track of the monthly number of materials delivered

4.      Other tasks

• Temporarily representing the publication's editorial team at social functions
• Taking part in decision-making meetings with the radio’s Director and Vice-director
• Contributing to the development and training of journalists and freelancers

Qualifications

• Strong previous journalistic experience,
• Ability to work with and through a multicultural team of journalists in a collaborative fashion
• Good organisation and planning skills to meet deadlines
• Demonstrated ability to manage a team, and to motivate others towards the achievement of common goals
• Arabic and Kurdish languages required
• Working knowledge in English is highly desirable
• Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments

Specifics

• Full-time position (40 hours / week)
• The position requires availability and on-site presence on weekdays
• Monthly salary : 1,200 USD (including transportation allowance)
