Job Title: Water & Sanitation Engineer

Place of Work: Erbil City – Iraq (with frequent travel to rural areas)

Capacity: Full-time

Reports to: Country Representative


Job Purpose

The position involves:

  1. Implementing water recycling and rural sanitation programs across several areas in Iraq, in partnership with local government entities.
  2. Building the capacity of local communities, NGO partners, staff members, and relevant government staff involved in the program.
  3. Liaising with local government and sector agencies at the district level to jointly plan and implement projects.
  4. In addition to WATSAN-related tasks, the Engineer will also be assigned other duties as needed, such as handling general engineering matters, conducting mapping or market surveys, managing product handling, or supporting other technical assignments within TAICHI Iraq’s operations.


Key Accountabilities

Implementation

  • Select projects for implementation.
  • Conduct detailed technical and market assessments.
  • Implement water and sanitation projects according to design and quality standards.

Capacity Building

  • Build the capacity of NGO partners in water systems, project quantity and cost estimation, and high-quality implementation.
  • Strengthen project management committees to build, operate, and maintain WASH facilities.
  • Support local government and district agencies in planning and monitoring.
  • Explore and promote alternative water supply technologies (rainwater harvesting, hand-dug wells, boreholes, etc.) suited to local contexts.
  • Promote Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS).

Coordination

  • Represent TAICHI Iraq in water and sanitation sector forums and meetings at district and national levels as directed by the Country Representative.
  • Provide regular progress reports to the TAICHI Iraq Country Representative.


Skills

Person Specification

Education

  • Essential: Degree or professional qualification in a relevant technical area (e.g., Engineering, Geology, Water or Sanitation Technology).

Experience

  • Essential:
  • Proven experience in community-based water supply, sanitation, and hygiene promotion projects in developing country contexts.
  • Experience in mentoring and building the capacity of colleagues and partner organizations.
  • Desirable:
  • Experience implementing projects through NGOs or local government partners.
  • Familiarity with water resource management concepts and alternative water and sanitation technologies.
  • Project management experience, including budget control.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong technical knowledge of community-based WASH and hygiene education projects.
  • Proven ability to plan, prioritize, and deliver work under pressure.
  • Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, email).
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel extensively.
  • Budgeting and project reporting skills.
  • Clear communication skills in both spoken and written English.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.


Place of Work

This position is based in Erbil, with extensive travel required to rural communities across Iraq.
