Job description
The Internal Auditor will be responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of internal controls, compliance, and governance processes across the university. This position provides independent and objective assurance to senior management and the Board of Trustees regarding the university’s financial integrity, operational efficiency, and compliance with applicable policies, regulations, and laws. The Internal Auditor will play a key role in strengthening institutional accountability and supporting continuous improvement initiatives across both academic and administrative units. The Internal Auditor will have a dual reporting line, reporting to the VPAF and the General Audit and Risk Committee of the board (GARC) during the scheduled committee meetings.
- Develop and implement an annual internal audit plan based on the assessments and institutional priorities.
- Conduct audits and reviews of financial, operational, compliance, and IT processes to assess internal controls and efficiency.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of policies, procedures, and systems, and provide recommendations for improvement.
- Monitor adherence to institutional policies, donor/grant requirements, and government regulations.
- Prepare detailed audit reports and present findings and recommendations to the Executive Committee, University Cabinet, and ultimately to the GARC, which will provide final approval prior to implementation.
- Conduct follow-up audits to ensure that audit recommendations have been effectively implemented.
- Collaborate with university units and colleges to promote best practices in internal control, and ethical conduct.
- Assist in investigations of reported irregularities, suspected fraud, or misconduct, maintaining confidentiality and integrity.
- Stay up to date with changes in relevant laws, regulations, accounting standards, and audit best practices.
- Contribute to institutional improvement efforts by identifying inefficiencies and control weaknesses during audits and advising on process enhancements.
- Maintain organized and accurate documentation in compliance with internal auditing standards and institutional policy.
Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field; a master’s degree is preferred.
- Professional certification such as CIA (Certified Internal Auditor), CPA (Certified Public Accountant), CMA (Certified Management Accountant) or equivalent is strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of relevant auditing experience, preferably in higher education, nonprofit, or public sector organizations.
- Strong understanding of internal control frameworks, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare clear, concise audit reports and present findings to diverse stakeholders.
- High level of integrity, ethics, and discretion in handling sensitive information.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Fluency in English is required.
