<p>The post holder is responsible for the daily veterinary care to the K9 Head of Section /Kennel Master of the Airport Canine Explosives & Narcotics Detection Unit. Ensure that K9 Teams are healthy and fit to perform their operational duties efficiently and safely. This is a key Iraqi national role and includes managing the full parameters of the veterinary programs to ensure that the Explosive & Narcotics Detection Canines are ‘Fit for Purpose’ and capable of performing their operational delivery. The incumbent should also possess the ability to forge relationships with peers and stakeholders (primarily the MOI K9 Veterinary and Licensing Directorate). The postholder plays a critical role in the readiness of Canines. Key Areas of Responsibility: a) Veterinary Care: Monitor health, nutrition, veterinary care and psychological well-being of all canines. b) Conduct Physical Examinations: Perform thorough physical exams to assess the overall health of dogs. c) Diagnose Illnesses and Injuries: Identify and diagnose health issues through various laboratory tests, such as blood tests, urinalysis, biopsies, X-rays, MRI and ultrasounds. d) Administer Vaccinations: Provide necessary vaccinations to protect dogs from infectious diseases. e) Perform Surgeries: Conduct surgeries, including routine procedures like spaying and neutering, as well as emergency surgeries f) Prescribe Medications: Recommend & prescribe medications for treating illnesses and managing chronic conditions. g) Provide Preventive Care: Offer advice on proper nutrition, exercise, and grooming to maintain dogs' health. h) Canine Feeding: Ensure that all canines are fed twice daily with the correct amount and quality of foodstuffs required for them to perform their duties. Coordinate with procurement for replenishment and upgrades. i) Educate K9 Handlers & Kennel Assistants: Guide handlers and Kennel Assistants in how to care for their dogs, including preventive healthcare, parasite control, dietary recommendations & emergency care. j) Maintain Medical Records: Keep detailed records of each dog's medical history, treatments, and progress. k) Handle Emergencies: Respond to urgent health issues and provide immediate critical care, stabilization and perform life-saving procedures. l) Collaborate with Specialists: Work with other veterinary specialists when advanced care or specific expertise is needed. m) Communication Skills: Proficiency in communicating with K9 Handlers & Kennel Assistants, explaining diagnoses, treatment options, and preventive care measures. n) MOI Veterinary & Licensing: Liaise closely with the MOI Veterinary & Licensing Department to ensure that all new canines are properly processed and meet the government & agency detection standards for EDDs and NDDs.</p><p>Education: • Doctorate Degree in Veterinary Science & Medicines. • Managing Safely (IOSH) or equivalent Experience: • Applicant must have veterinary experience – either military, police or civilian. • Minimum of 2 years in a K9 security management role with national and/or international experience. • Experience of operating in post conflict, multicultural & low infrastructure environments. • Minimum of 2 years working within an airport and/or other highly regulated, physical security-based establishment. Language Skills: • Solid knowledge and command of written and spoken English (essential) and Arabic (desirable). Training Requirements: • Ability to deliver basic animal husbandry training to canine support staff in benign and post conflict environments.
